Chanel Paris-Shanghai Collection

Presenting the pre-fall Chanel Paris-Shanghai Métiers d’Art 2010 collection, an opulent tribute to China’s history and culture.

A collection that’s only possible after Chanel’s acquisition in 2002 of the seven specialist Parisian ateliers which include the metal-crafts house of Desrues; the feather-maker, Lemarié; the embroiderer, Lesage; the shoemaker, Massaro; the milliner, Michel; the goldsmith, Goossens; and the flower-maker, Guillet. Together, their traditional artistry is preserved, working closely with Chanel to execute Karl Lagerfeld’s designs, with a unique seasonal collection year after year.

This year (and aptly so), Chanel (or 香奈儿 in Chinese) presented a colossal collection that saw intense attention to detail that rivalled the rich, extravagant opulence of the old imperial courts. References to Chinese arts and culture were fully represented, from the colour of lacquer red to Chinese knots, antique chest hinges to the burnished hue of tarnished bronze, it was (and still is) truly a feast for the senses.

The bags and accessories were no different, precious museum-quality pieces sent down the runway. The Classic Flap and 2.55 were reinterpreted and came in a multitude of exquisite finishes, including a clutch with dragon scales in jade green, rich brocade quilted bags and then some embellished with glittering sequins that sparkled to a bygone era that has passed but is not forgotten.

Four Door Beamer !!

With four of the five premium German automakers adopting the four-door coupe experiment, BMW is not blind to the realization that they are the living with a void in their product array. Shown at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show as a concept vehicle, BMW showed off their fighter to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the soon to be released Audi A7 Sportback. Identified in China as the Gran Coupe, BMW’s low-looking, four-door captured the sporty essence the brand known for producing “The ultimate driving machine” is meant to project. Though classified as a concept, the degree of production car cues made it clear that the Gran Coupe was merely awaiting a powerplant choice and a starting price tag. According to Automotive News, BMW has issued the official go ahead to the Gran Coupe’s production version for the 2012 calendar year.

Presenting a satisfying exterior image, expect very little to change from the Gran Coupe concept vehicle. Shorter in overall height than the BMW 3-Series sedan, the four-door coupe’s design conveys a racier appearance which also helps lower the center of gravity. Wheel arches are powerfully emphasized while vehicle lighting projects an equally strong character. On the concept Gran Coupe, BMW took a fresh approach on the tail lighting.
If going with a choice of existing powerplants, the 4.8 liter normally-aspirated V-8 or the 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V-8 seems to be formidable candidates featuring 360 and 400 horsepower. The only problem with these high-technology BMW engines is they’re already widely used in the current German luxury car lineup. If BMW wants to furnish more of a specialized sports coupe, there might be a chance for the German automaker could spark an unique sensation with their fusion creation. Perhaps the 4 liter V-8 used in the BMW M3 could inspire the passion needed for their upcoming four-door coupe.

The roll-out of BMW’s four-door coupe is expected to closely correspondent with the upcoming revision of the 6-Series. Caught testing at the Nurburgring next week, the set of spied 2012 BMW 6-Series (provided on pistonspy.com) has given potentially truer insight on the composure of the four-door coupe drivetrain. A six-cylinder entry-level engine is expected to produce more than 300 horsepower while a 4.4 liter V-8 will again be offered with a mild power bump. The real power gain will be made on the new BMW M6 slated to house a powerplant with a 600 horse output. It’s reasonable to assume the four-door coupe will also be honoured through an M line upgrade. Automotive News’ source with the announcement has also entertained (albeit casually) the notion that the production vehicle based on the Gran Coupe could be a hybrid.
With the BMW production car unlikely to be sold with the Gran Coupe name, the question remains for where will the four-door coupe fit in the German’s auto company’s numerical lineup. With the Bavarian auto company wanting to position this car above the 5-Series, the closest number left available on top of the listing is 8-Series. However, it seems more reasonable that BMW may opt to use their alphanumeric sports car scheme the ‘Z’ preceding the selected number perhaps the Z5 or Z6.

Living In Brentwood Has Never Been Better

In 2005, Dr. Jeremy and Ann Korman commissioned Cory Buckner, Architect to design a remodel to their Brentwood home.  With two daughters and a French bulldog, named ZsaZsa, they had long outgrown their 1700 square foot ranch house built in the 50s. They longed for contemporary, comfortable space for their family.

The program for the project included a second story addition to house a master suite, a home office for Dr. Korman, a surgeon, and a painting studio for Ann.  Situated at the bottom of a canyon, the entrance to the original house was 66 steps from the street to the front door. The new design incorporated a bridge to an entrance at the second floor addition reducing the steps to 44.  The former master bedroom on the lower level became one daughter’s room and two small bedrooms at the rear of the house were combined to make a suite for the other daughter.

The entire house was impacted by the remodel with most of the house being demolished.  The former master suite, kitchen, and dining roof structure remained intact but many interior walls were demolished or reconfigured.

Ann was drawn to the postwar post and beam architecture of the modernist era and selected Buckner who specializes in mid-century modernist architecture remodels and restoration.  The house is located just outside of Crestwood Hills, formerly called the Mutual Housing Association tract, designed by A. Quincy Jones, Whitney R. Smith, and Edgardo Contini in the late 40s.  Buckner has restored or remodeled more than a dozen houses in the neighborhood and is author of A. Quincy Jones published by Phaidon Press.

Because the house is set at the bottom of a canyon it was important to capture as much light as possible.  Buckner designed a butterfly roof structure for the second story addition in order to capture light from high clerestory windows that reach up to the ceiling.  Some of the window configurations on the original house incorporated posts and worked well with the second story addition designed as an exposed post and beam structure. Skylights were added in the kitchen and over the fireplace, which in addition to adding light in the living room accents an articulated tiled fireplace mass.  All bedrooms face patios or decks with sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary of indoor and outdoor space.

The finish material palette was kept appropriate for a house tucked into a wooded canyon. The existing house was finished in rough sawn board-and-batt with a composition shingle roof.  The new house is clad in new growth cedar tongue and groove siding with a roof covered in slate green gravel.  Douglas fir flooring and cabinets were used throughout the project.  The countertops are Ceasarstone, tile is either recycled tiles from ModernArc or glass tiles from Ann Sachs.

Shortly before demolition began, Ann sold or gave away all of their furniture with the idea of purchasing all new furniture for the project.  As the daughter of an art collector, she has an exquisite eye for design.  She worked closely with the architect in selecting every piece of furniture and finishes. To start the collection on the right foot, at the beginning of the project, her father gave her a George Nakashima dining table and coffee table.

Venice For Ever

The Grand Canal is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

Most of the palaces emerge from water without pavement: only by sailing one can contemplate the continuity of this peaceful sequence of façades illuminated by water reflections, isolated from streams of pedestrians and “fenced” with piles. The Grand Canal is thus an enchanted place, contributing to the magic of one of the most beloved cities in the world.

What can be better than the performance and power of a Ferrari 458 Italia, How about the performance and power of a stylishly-tuned Ferrari 458 Italia? Called the Design Edition Race, these 21 inch alloy wheels frame the spoke pattern as an outset colour to the tires. Swiss Architect, Peter Schurch Wins 2010 Passivhaus Award With Hyper Efficient House

The winner of the 2010 Passivhaus Architecture Award is a fantastic three-apartment building on the outskirts of Bern, Switzerland. Built by architect Peter Schurch, principle of Halle 52, the building breaks the mold for passive house design by incorporating a lot of glass — over 50% of the facade — yet it still achieves a strict 13kWr per sq meter of energy consumption a year.

Natural and local materials, plenty of daylight and a unique footprint made the award a shoe in — the building even cost less to build than the other homes in the neighborhood, yet it has r-52 walls and a solar-electric green roof.

The three nearly identical apartments are graced with an abundance of natural light thanks to a bank of triple-paned windows adjacent to the walkout porches. The architect added some nice sustainable touches like a green roof ribbed with solar electric panels, a pellet boiler for heating the floors and hot water, and wooden shades on the outside of the porch to reduce the summer heat. The apartment building also received the Minergie (minimal energie) certification, which is a Swiss low-energy standard much stricter than its American counterpart LEED.

The pie-shaped footprint is a departure from typical passivhaus building, which allows for an almost solarium effect on one side of the building and a generously wide living space on the other. The framing and interior wood cladding is from local forests, and air quality is taken care of by a careful selection of finishes and a heat recovery ventilator — the heart of passivhaus design. This well rounded and thoughtful design provides ample evidence that good green building is attainable and affordable if we set our mind to it.
